A Female Clerk's Legal Dispute with Tenaga Nasional Berhad

On 19 November 2024, Lee Sok Wah & Co. won an exhilarating verdict at the Kuantan Session Court. Ms. Alice Lee’s client, who had their identity stolen to rent a shop and was accused of being involved in mining activities, was sued by Tenaga Nasional Berhad for a huge electricity bill. We won!

Here’s how the story goes: One day, the female clerk received a letter from Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s lawyer, stating that she owed a large amount of electricity bills. She was required to pay this fee within a certain period, otherwise, Tenaga Nasional Berhad would sue her in civil court.

The female clerk was shocked and went to Tenaga Nasional Berhad to find out the truth, only to be told that she was a user of Tenaga Nasional Berhad and had rented a place at a certain location for mining activities. In the process, the electric meter was damaged, so Tenaga Nasional Berhad calculated the electricity fee in the most expensive way.

The female clerk checked the so-called lease contract and found that she had never been to that place. Clearly, this was a scam, and her identity card had been stolen.

The female clerk reported the case to the police, but they did not conduct any investigation because they believed that Tenaga Nasional Berhad also had the right to investigate complaints about damaged electric meters, so they did not want to interfere in such fraud cases.

The problem was that Tenaga Nasional Berhad also did not set up an investigation team to send people to investigate. They directly sued the person involved in civil court, forcing the innocent person to spend money on a lawyer to fight the case. But how many people can afford to hire a lawyer?

Ms. Alice Lee doesn’t know how many people have been wronged, but I deeply know that this practice of the police and Tenaga Nasional Berhad shirking responsibility must be stopped, otherwise more people will become victims of this unfair system.
